Shaun Brassfield-Thorpe has been William Sichel’s training advisor since 2006, during which time William has achieved his greatest ultra-running successes – including setting the M55 World Records for the 6-Day race, 1000 km and 1000 mile races.
Shaun is an expert martial arts instructor (with over 25 years experience in diverse styles), strength and flexibility coach, complimentary therapist and teaches body posture and breath development for health and fitness. Shaun has instructed at gyms and weight training facilities, and has taught lectures, seminars, classes and workshops in the UK and the USA. Shaun has also lectured on body posture, breath and movement theory to international orchestra conductors at the request of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, the Master of the Queen’s Music.
Shaun has the highest martial arts teaching qualification recognised by the Stav International Organisation and for more than a decade has been one of the five most senior instructors worldwide of the Stav martial art. Shaun is a personal student of Ivar Hafskjold, family inheritor of the Stav tradition. Shaun has studied and taught Stav since the early 1990s and has students in the UK, Scandinavia and the USA.
Shaun specialises in the fields of applied strength development, active flexibility training, breath integration, body posture correction, spinal realignment, joint manipulation, economy of motion theory, body dynamics, weight training for power and endurance, therapeutic massage and intrinsic energy development. Shaun espouses a holistic development of the body and mind in all sports and physical development, drawing heavily on his training and expertise in martial arts and health traditions.
In addition to his Stav training Shaun has in the past studied numerous other martial arts, health promotion methods and combat systems, and fought in both full-contact and light-contact competitions. Some of his early training included modified Shaolin Longfist under Master Chet Alexander, traditional Wing Chun as well as both “soft” and “hard” Qi-Gong under Sifu Michael Tse, practising Muay Thai (Thai Boxing) , “freestyle” Kickboxing and “dabbling in” ju-jitsu, aikido, karate and other arts.
